Analysis of DISC Combustion Using a Pilot Flame Ignition System

A new DISC combustion system with a pilot flame for ignition was analyzed by using a model combustion chamber of a Wankel type rotary engine. A two-stroke diesel engine's cylinder head was replaced with this combustion chamber to simulate temporal changes of air flow and pressure fields inside the chamber as in actual engines. Two types of fuel injection systems were tested to obtain combustion characteristics such as the heat release rate. Direct photographs of spray and combustion were analyzed to understand the mixture-formation process of the main spray and to see the flame temperature distribution and flame moving velocity vectors. In order to understand the mixture-formation process, numerical calculations were made using a gaseous fuel. Finally, the effect of the fuel characteristics on combustion was examined using diesel fuel and n- hexane.

Proposition of a Stratified Charge System by Using In-Cylinder Gas Motion

A new idea for controlling the in-cylinder mixture formation in SI engines is proposed. This concept was developed by applying the results of numerical calculations. Fuel that is directly injected into the cylinder is transferred toward the cylinder head to form a mixture stratification by using the in-cylinder gas motion that is generated by the interaction between the swirl and squish flows inside a combustion chamber. At first, the flow characteristics were measured in the whole in-cylinder space using an LDV system. Also, numerical calculations of the in-cylinder flow were made using measured data as the initial conditions. Secondly, the local equivalence ratio at several points inside the combustion chamber was measured by using a fast gas sampling device.

In order to enhance the reliability of a pilot flame ignition system, three kinds of subchambers in which a pilot injector and a glow plug were set up were tested with a model combustion chamber of DISC rotary engine. A two-stroke Diesel engine's cylinder head was replaced with this model combustion chamber to simulate temporal changes of air flow and pressure fields inside the chamber as an actual engine. The behavior of the pilot flame generated in the subchamber, ignition process of main fuel spray by the pilot flame, the most suitable mixture distribution between the main chamber and the subchamber, and the effect of nozzle diameter of main injector on combustion characteristics were studied by using a high-speed video camera and ion probes.

A Study on New Combustion Method of High Compression Ratio Spark Ignition Engine

A new combustion method of high compression ratio SI engine was studied and proposed in order to achieve higher thermal efficiency of SI engine comparable to that of CI engine. Compression ratio of SI engine is generally restricted by the knocking phenomena. A combustion chamber profile and a cranking mechanism are studied to avoid knocking with high compression ratio. Since reducing the end-gas temperature will suppress knocking, a combustion chamber was considered to have a wide surface at the end-gas region. However, wide surface will lead to high heat loss, which may cancel the gain of higher compression ratio operation. Thereby, a special cranking mechanism was adopted which allowed the piston to move rapidly near TDC. Numerical simulations were performed to optimize the cranking mechanism for achieving higher thermal efficiency. An elliptic gear system and a leaf-shape gear system were employed in the simulations.

Analysis of Mixture Formation Process with a Swirl-Type Injector

A swirl-type injector is commonly used for the gasoline direct injection IC engines. To control and optimize the engine combustion, analyses of mixture formation process inside the cylinder are quite important. In this study, an evaluation of a DDM (Discrete Droplet Model) including breakup and evaporation sub-models has been made by making comparisons between the calculation and measurement. In the calculation, two kinds of initial conditions were tested; one was from empirical expressions and the other was from calculated results using a VOF (Volume Of Fluid) model that had a feature to examine the free fluid surface of a liquid fuel spray. As a result, the authors have found that a DDM can basically explain the spray formation process. However, much further modification of the breakup model and initial conditions would be required to have a quantitatively good agreement between the calculation and measurement

Numerical Analysis of Gas Exchange Process in a Small Two-Stroke Gasoline Engine

To survive the severe regulations for both the exhaust gas emissions and fuel economy, research on small two-stroke gasoline engines from both the experimental and theoretical viewpoints is quite necessary. In the present study, firstly, performance tests of a direct injection small two-stroke gasoline model engine were carried out. Based on these experimental results, three-dimensional flow calculations from scavenging pipe to exhaust pipe during the gas-exchange and piston compression processes were made with the same experimental conditions. As a result, the gas exchange process was investigated and some problems were clarified. Secondly, parametric calculations with changing just exhaust port timings were performed to solve the problems found in the above calculations.

Fuel Stratification Using Twin-Tumble Intake Flows to Extend Lean Limit in Super-Lean Gasoline Combustion

To drastically improve thermal efficiency of a gasoline spark-ignited engine, super-lean burn is a promising solution. Although, studies of lean burn have been made by so many researchers, the realization is blocked by a cycle-to-cycle combustion variation. In this study, based on the causes of cycle-to-cycle variation clarified by the authors’ previous study, a unique method to reduce the cycle-to-cycle variation is proposed and evaluated. That is, a bulk quench at early expansion stroke could be reduced by making slight fuel stratification inside the cylinder using the twin-tumble of intake flows. As a result, the lean limit was extended with keeping low NOx and moderate THC emissions, leading to higher thermal efficiency.

Numerical Simulation to Understand the Cause and Sequence of LSPI Phenomena and Suggestion of CaO Mechanism in Highly Boosted SI Combustion in Low Speed Range

The authors investigated the reasons of how a preignition occurs in a highly boosted gasoline engine. Based on the authors' experimental results, theoretical investigations on the processes of how a particle of oil or solid comes out into the cylinder and how a preignition occurs from the particle. As a result, many factors, such as the in-cylinder temperature, the pressure, the equivalence ratio and the component of additives in the lubricating oil were found to affect the processes. Especially, CaCO3 included in an oil as an additive may be changed to CaO by heating during the expansion and exhaust strokes. Thereafter, CaO will be converted into CaCO3 again by absorbing CO2 during the intake and compression strokes. As this change is an exothermic reaction, the temperature of CaCO3 particle increases over 1000K of the chemical equilibrium temperature determined by the CO2 partial pressure.

Improvement of Post-Oxidation for Low-Emission Engines through 3D-CFD Virtual Development

There is a growing need for low-emissions concepts due to stricter emission regulations, more stringent homologation cycles, and the possibility of a ban on new engines by 2035. Of particular concern are the conditions during a cold start, when the Three-Way Catalyst is not yet heated to its light-off temperature. During this period, the catalyst remains inactive, thereby failing to convert pollutants. Reducing the time needed to reach this temperature is crucial to comply with the more stringent emissions standards. The post oxidation by means of secondary air injection, illustrated in this work, is a possible solution to reduce the time needed to reach the above-mentioned temperature. The strategy consists of injecting air into the exhaust manifold via secondary air injectors to oxidize unburned fuel that comes from a rich combustion within the cylinder.

Investigation on Relationship between LSPI and Lube Oil Consumption and Its Countermeasure

LSPI (Low speed pre-ignition) is a serious issue in highly boosted gasoline engines. The causes have been studied and lube oil affects the onset. In order to examine the effect of lubricating oil consumption on super knock caused by pre-ignition, measurements of in-cylinder pressure, temperature, oil consumption by sulfur trace at steady and transient conditions were conducted. Also, new piston ring pack was applied to reduce both of blow-by gas and oil consumption. As a result, accumulated oil during deceleration was found to cause pre-ignition after acceleration. The pre-ignition frequency is much higher than in steady condition, however, the amount of oil does not directly affect pre-ignition frequency, but dilution of oil and evaporation of oil/fuel and other parameters, such as temperature, pressure, and oil additives determine pre-ignition onset. In order to see the mechanism of pre-ignition onset, numerical simulations were conducted.

Following Part 1 of the previous study, this paper reports the structure’s exciting force and summarize the overall research results. An experimental study was conducted to clarify the relationship between engine combustion and vibration, and to establish technology to suppress it. This study focused on the vehicle interior noise caused by combustion in which vibration transmission is the main component at high speed and high load region. A phenomenon in which both the combustion’s exciting force and the structure’s exciting force are combined is defined as vehicle interior noise caused by combustion. Conventionally, combustion and vibration are often discussed in terms of the average cycle, but considering the nonstationary property of vibration, in this paper analyzed the structure’s exciting force characteristics for vibration in cycle-by-cycle. Analysis was conducted using the combustion indicators clarified in the previous study.

Measurement of Liquid Fuel Film Attached to the Wall in a Port Fueled SI Gasoline Engine

Liquid fuel attached to the wall surface of the intake port, the piston and the combustion chamber is one of the main causes of the unburned hydrocarbon emissions from a port fueled SI engine, especially during transient operations. To investigate the liquid fuel film formation process and fuel film behavior during transient operation is essential to reduce exhaust emissions in real driving operations, including cold start operations. Optical techniques have been often applied to measure the fuel film in conventional reports, however, it is difficult to apply those previous techniques to actual engines during transient operations. In this study, using MEMS technique, a novel capacitance sensor has been developed to detect liquid fuel film formation and evaporation processes in actual engines. A resistance temperature detector (RTD) was also constructed on the MEMS sensor with the capacitance sensor to measure the sensor surface temperature.

Combustion Characteristics of a Direct Injection Stratified Charge Rotary Engine Using Spark Ignition and Pilot Flame Ignition Systems

A Direct Injection Stratified Charge Rotary Engine (DISC-RE) with a pilot flame ignition system which has high ignition energy, large flame contact area and long duration of ignition source, has been examined comparing with a spark ignition system, using a model combustion chamber simulating a DISC-RE. As a result, it was found that the combustion using the pilot flame ignition system was activated and that a better ignitability was attained under lean mixture conditions than using a spark ignition system. To analyze these experimental results, numerical calculations of the mixture formation and combustion process were carried out. Numerical analyses proved that the pilot flame ignition system was superior to the spark ignition system as the pilot flame ignition made large-area ignition source and large inflammable mixture region. Finally, a single rotor with 650 cc displacement DISC-RE was built as a prototype.

Numerical Analysis of Combustion and Flow Inside a Small Rotary Engine for Developing an Unmanned Helicopter

For a disaster relief and automatic inspections, an unmanned helicopter is strongly expected. To develop this, a very high power density source is required. A Wankel-type rotary engine can be the best candidate for the power source. In this study, the development of a very small rotary engine with a displacement of 30 cc is targeted. In order to improve the combustion efficiency, gas exchange and stable ignition, a multi dimensional simulation inside the combustion chamber was carried out. At first, the effect of volumetric efficiency on the maximum power is mentioned. Secondly, the effect of scavenging efficiency is discussed. Thirdly, a blow off through a plug hole is described. The position of plug hole was found important to reduce the blow off amount. Finally, the effect of combustion speed on the engine performance is predicted. As a result, the proposed design will be tested using a proto-type engine.

A Study of the Mechanism of High-Speed Knocking in a Two-Stroke SI Engine with High Compression Ratio

Experimental methods and numerical analysis were used to investigate the mechanism of high-speed knocking that occurs in small two-stroke engines. The multi-ion probe method was used in the experiments to visualize flame propagation in the cylinder. The flame was detected by 14 ion probes grounded in the end gas region. A histogram was made of the order in which flames were detected. The characteristics of combustion in the cylinder were clarified by comparing warming up and after warming up and by extracting the features of the cycle in which knocking occurred. As a result, regions of fast flame propagation and regions prone to auto-ignition were identified. In the numerical analysis, flow and residual gas distribution in the cylinder, flame propagation and self-ignition were visualized by 3D CFD using 1D CFD calculation results as boundary conditions and initial conditions.

Heat Transfer Analysis in a Diesel Engine Based on a Heat Flux Measurement Using a Rapid Compression and Expansion Machine

To investigate the heat transfer phenomena inside the combustion chamber of a diesel engine, a correlation for the heat transfer coefficient in a combustion chamber of a diesel engine was investigated based on heat flux measured by the authors in the previous study(8) using the rapid compression and expansion machine. In the correlation defined in the present study, thermodynamically estimated two-zone temperatures in the burned zone and the unburned zone are applied. The characteristic velocity given in the correlation is related to the speed of spray flame impinging on the wall during the fuel injection period. After the fuel injection period, the velocity term of the Woschni’s equation is applied. It was shown that the proposed correlation well expresses heat transfer phenomena in diesel engines.

Effect of Coolant Water and Intake Air Temperatures on Thermal Efficiency of Gasoline Engines

An optimization of thermal management system in a gasoline engine is considered to improve thermal efficiency by minimizing the cost increase without largely changing the configuration of engine system. In this study, the influence of water temperature and intake air temperature on thermal efficiency were investigated using an inline four-cylinder 1.2L gasoline engine. In addition, one-dimensional engine simulations were conducted by using a software of GT-SUITE. Brake thermal efficiency for different engine speeds and loads could be quantitatively predicted with changing the cooling water temperature in the cylinder head. Then, in order to predict the improvement of the fuel consumption in actual use, vehicle mode running simulation and general-purpose engine transient mode simulation were carried out by GT-SUITE. As a result, it was found that by controlling the temperatures of the cooling water and intake gas, thermal efficiency can be improved by several percent.

Investigation of The Effect of Enhanced In-Cylinder Flow on HCCI Combustion in a Rapid Compression and Expansion Machine

The purpose of this paper is to find a way to extend the high load limit of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion. A newly developed rapid compression and expansion machine (RCEM) was employed to reproduce the typical HCCI high load condition. The in-cylinder turbulence was created by the special piston which equipped with a flow guide plate. Meanwhile, the ambient temperature distribution in the cylinder was determined by the wall temperature controlling system which was controlled by the independent coolant passages. In addition, the numerical simulation by using large eddy method coupled with a detailed chemical reaction was conducted as well. The results show that HCCI mode is potential to be improved at high load condition in full consideration of in-cylinder temperature, flow, and turbulence.

It has been widely known that thermal and fuel stratifications of in-cylinder mixture are effective to reduce in-cylinder pressure rise rate during high load HCCI operations. In order to optimize a combustion chamber design and combustion control strategy for HCCI engines with wide operational range, it is important to know quantitatively the influence of the temperature and fuel concentration distributions on ignition and heat release characteristics. At the same time, it is important to know the influence of in-cylinder flow and turbulence on the temperature and fuel concentration distributions. In this study, a numerical simulation of HCCI combustion were conducted to investigate the effects of the in-cylinder flow and turbulence, and the distributions of temperature on ignition and combustion characteristics in HCCI combustion.

Numerical Investigation of Knocking in a Small Two-Stroke Engine with a High Compression Ration to Improve Thermal Efficiency

This study aimed to achieve both a high compression ratio and low knock intensity in a two-stroke engine. Previous research has suggested that knock intensity can be reduced by combining combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passaging design for the same engine specifications with a compression ratio of 13.7. In this report, we investigate whether low knock intensity can be achieved at compression ratios of 14.4 and 16.8 by adjusting the combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passage design. As a result, the mechanism by which combustion chamber geometry and scavenging passage design change knock intensity was clarified.
